It's october now - I loved October in Putney. Sneakers were the key - How long could I get away with wearing them before the cold was too much. Once I made it all the way to Thanksgiving. And by then the leaves were all gone....My California sunset finds me longing this evening. |

Hi Jerry - There is something surreal about our current geography and how we met way back then. In many ways, southern Vermont was my Tuscany. And it was all so foreign to me - a kid from Manhattan. So much I didn't know, took for granted, entirely missed....Yet how rich and vivid it all still is. I must built a fire now. It is damp here in Marin, October almost gone. I remember how special we all were to each other, how mad the world outside seemed, how magical we all were together - crazy beyond belief. Thank you for showing up, both back then and somehow now. You know, it's not the memories or the meloncholy - it's the knowing even now that we were right. And boy weren't we ever!!! bruce |

Always early for the things that matter little, I arrive late for the 2005 reunion, but am here if you care to touch the wisp of memories from 62-63. There was so much turmoil in that year, yet I remember Sandanona's peace as the closeby hills poked through the morning mists, way too early each morning. I remember the chairs out front that held my form and the 100 great books we were to absorb, as if that were even possible. I remeber a cold night, a less cold keg and a young fireball named Tory(i) Glen (sp. there is a street by that name just outside of Reston where I now live and pass almost every day... it is not needed to keep that memory alive, but doess bring a smile each time I pass). I remember as well Brubeck (always seemed to be "take Five" playing) softly joining with great philosphical debate (at 18 we thought we knew what it all meant) playing chess with I can't remember who, sipping on a Dajaling Tea (sp)and making coy remarks to Joan Hoffer (My Lambchops - with sadness knowing that Shari Lewis and the hand pupet "Lambchops" are gone forever) at the same time. Joan and I shared New Years Eve that year in Brooklyn and I had such an inflated sense of well being or alcohol induced at any rate, that I tried to go the wrong way through the tunnel on my way back home (obviously I survived the attempt and the ticket). It wasn't all great... I remember my second home at school, the shack that did not resemble Sandanona in any way whatever. I remember the cold that came in through cardboard covered windows and somehow still rushed through our bodies once inside. I remember reading by the only light that was a bare bulb hanging in the stairwell. Mostly I remember the cold as that was where we spent the winter longing for the new dorm to come a bit too late. I also remember Bill Krupp, who despite his American family heritage was always trying so hard to befriend this little Jewish kid and saved my ass from freezing more than once, by driving me down the hill. Most of all I remember Prof's that cared and taught their hearts out even when the cash ran out. What they initiated in me continues to this day. Sorry for the ramblings, but I have had this inside of me for a very long time with no other survivor with which to share. If you remember me do assist in helping me to feel part of this assembly. Cheers, Lee Konowe 703-928-2805 |

Dear Lee - I don't think we've met - having myself arrived in Putney late January '66. But I do know you by osmosis and I thank you both for your time spent and your heartfelt recounting. There was a brilliant, unique clarity to our collective northern exposure. Great sacrifices - large and small - brought us through it all. It is so good to hear of the richness present before our arrival. Those of us who came later heard your footsteps and in our own stumbling way honored them. Thanks for giving voice to the ancestors. |
